"If I Die Before I Wake..."

“If I die before I wake, I want the Lord my soul to take.”

So, let’s say you die before you wake, and the lord comes and takes your soul – and then what? I assume you’re supposed to live in heaven, and life in heaven is supposed to be great. Even though, logically speaking, it’d mainly be boring. And scary. Like, isn’t eternity the scariest thing of them all? Nietzsche knew. Oh, and rationally speaking, there is no heaven anyway, no lord, no soul. (Even though it’s nice and legitimate and possibly meaningful, to imagine a heaven, and a lord, and a soul, but then you’d still only be dead if you die before you wake, if you know what I’m saying?) So, what’s this prayer thing all about then?

“If I die before I wake, I want the Lord my soul to take.” I still say it every night. It makes me sleep better.
